If you are going to be working from home you must inform your Home insurer that the property will be used in part for business purposes, even if just clerical work, and even if it is just using your spare room or garage. Otherwise if you made a claim on your home insurance which included business equipment and your home insurer is unaware of this activity they would query this and it and could affect the amount paid and if insurers are able to settle the claim.
With your motor insurance if you will be using your vehicle for client visits, making collections and deliveries and any other commercial activities you need to make your motor insurer aware so they can ensure you have the correct cover in place.
There are package policies for home based businesses covering things such as contents, stock liability and business interruption cover, they can be the ideal solution if the cover your business needs is more than your home insurer can assist you with. Ordinary business policies can sometimes be unable to accommodate home businesses as the physical security of doors, windows, garage doors etc can differ from a purpose built shop or office premises.
